ASSESSING THE GRAMMATICAL MASTERY OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 1 AMLAPURA IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2012/2013

ABSTRAK

This study focused on assessing the grammatical mastery of the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Amlapura in academic year 2012/2013. This study was intended to answer the research question: to what extent is the acquisition of grammatical mastery of the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Amlapura in academic year 2012/2013. In order to answer the research question, the data required for the study which were in the form of raw scores, showing the ability of the students in grammatical mastery were collected by administering the valid and reliable research instrument in the form of multiple choice test. The finding of the present study used an ex post facto research design. The data were analyzed by using norm reference measures of five standard values. The population of the study was the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Amlapura which consisted of 280 students. They were considered to have heterogeneous characteristics. There were 40 students determined as the sample of the study by using quota random sampling technique. The result of the data analysis clearly showed that (1) only 4 sample or 10.00% out of 40 samples under investigation achieved excellent in grammatical mastery, (2) 9 samples or 22.50% out of 40 samples under investigation achieved good in grammatical mastery, (3) 12 samples or 30.00% out of 40 samples under investigation achieved sufficient in grammatical mastery, (4) 14 samples or 3 5.00% out of 40 samples under investigation achieved insufficient in grammatical mastery, (5) 1 sample or 2.50% out of 40 samples under investigation achieved poor in grammatical mastery. In conclusion, these research findings could be regarded to show rather sufficient acquisition of the grammatical mastery of the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Am1apra in academic year 2012/2013. Based on the result of study, the hypothesis of the present study was rejected because the result of the finding was sufficient.
