IMPROVING SPEAKING SKILL OF THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA N 1 GIANYAR IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2016/2017 THROUGH ROLE PLAY TECHNIQUE

ABSTRAK

The study focused on improving speaking skill of the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Gianyar in academic year 2016/2017. The present classroom action study was basically triggered by the fact that the subject under study still faced problem in speaking skill. It was proven by the mean score of pre-test which was only 60.46. The subjects’ problem should be immediately solved. The implementation of role play was expected to be an effective way to improve speaking skill of the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Gianyar. In this classroom action study, the teaching and learning process were divided into two cycles and each cycle consisted of two sessions. The obtained data of the present classroom action study were collected through the administration of pre-test, post-test, and questionnaire which was analyzed descriptively. The results of the reflection or post-test scores obtained by the subjects under study in cycle I was 78.69 and in cycle II was 84.97. The finding showed that there was constant improvement mean of the students achievement after the researcher applied role play technique. In addition, the results of the questionnaire showed that the students who choose option A was 50.38%, option B was 47.96%, option C was 1.66%, and option D was 0%. From the results of the study, it could be concluded that the role play could improve the tenth grade students’ speaking skill of SMA N 1 Gianyar in academic year 2016/2017.
