ABSTRAK

This study had purpose to assess recount text writing ability of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Denpasar in academic year 2016/2017 through picture sequence description. Moreover, it was intended to answer the research question: to what extent is the recount text writing ability of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Denpasar in academic year 2016/2017 which is assessed through picture sequence description? This study was used an ex post facto research design. The 50 samples were determined by using random sampling with lottery system. The results of the test were analyzed by using norm-reference measures of five standard values. The data that were needed for the presen t study were collected through administering picture sequence description test as the instrument. The computation of the converted scores clearly pointed out: (1) there were 5 samples (10.00%) who showed excellent achievement in achievement writing ability, (2) 6 samples (12.00%) who showed good achievement, (3) 24 samples (48.00%) who showed sufficient achievement, (4) 10 samples (20.00%) who showed insufficient achievement, and (5) 5 samples (10.00%) who showed poor achievement. In conclusion, these research findings showed that the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Denpasar in academic year 2016/2017 had sufficient achievement on recount text writing ability.
